When it comes to training and physical exercise, continuing to do what you’ve always done isn’t ALWAYS the best method. Your body is going through alot of physiological, physical and emotional changes. None that you have experienced before as a first time mum and maybe different from your previous births.
Let’s take a closer look –
From conception the body is working hard to put the “pieces of the puzzle” together. Drawing on nutrient stores in your body to build a healthy and complete baby over its 9 month journey.
As a pregnant woman, you have a hormone called Relaxin released into your body. Relaxin rises all throughout the first trimester and remains until approx 8 weeks after giving birth. This hormone allows for the joint structures and musculoskeletal system to soften, particularly around the pelvis to aid in the delivery of the baby. This can sometimes cause pain around the pelvis as the joints can become unstable and rub together.
Tips for managing relaxin during pregnancy –
Avoid sports with lots of change in direction as you could be prone to rolled/ sprained ankles
Take care when walking on uneven surfaces
Keep your steps small and reduce the load transfer from left to right side
When exercising, avoid single leg exercises such as step ups and lunges as these will only aggravate the pain.
